Why and When Do I need a Model Release?

Why do you need permission?

Photos with people sell twice as often as other photos. But if there is a recognizable person in the photo, you'll need to get their permission in the form of a Model Release.

Getting a model release from the people in your photo protects you and the buyer from legal issues. Photos with model releases are in high demand from customers.

What does "recognizable person" mean?

See the images below for some helpful hints, and then take this quiz to see if you know which photos need a permission! Then use the app or the website to ask the models for permission.

What if a picture of yourself?

Hi Angeline! If the recognizable person in the photo is yourself, you still need to get a model release. Luckily, it's very easy to give permission for yourself- just tag your name and provide a digital signature!

Hi! I have several photos of the same person I want to submit. Does my model have to sign a release for every single photo or just fill it out once? Thanks for your help!

Hi Sharon! We understand it can be inconvenient but currently, the model must sign a release for every single photo they are in. This is because after a photo is uploaded, you must tag the person's name and send them a request for a digital signature through Twenty20.

Thanks Madii! Any plans to allow photographers to store a model release online the first time so it will be accessible for sure photos?

We hope to implement an easier way for photographers to get model releases for multiple photos of the same person in the near future!
